Party for a Purpose

St George’s Cadboro Bay respectfully acknowledges the land we stand and pray on. The soil here holds the history and footsteps of the lək̓ʷəŋən peoples. On the traditional territory of the Songhees, Esquimalt and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples, we uphold the hopeful and healing spirit of reconciliation. We will be in the church decorating for Thanksgiving on Saturday, October 12th at 10:00. We would love to have any interested congregation members join us then.    

We are asking for donations of flowers, greenery, garden produce, grocery items, and anything else people would like to donate as we celebrate God's bounty! These will be used to decorate the church for our Thanksgiving services and all food items will be given to those in need in our community. Please consider sharing God's gifts with others in this way.

Donations can be dropped off at the church office or with us at 10:00 on October 12th

Holden Prayer continues on the third Wednesday of the month, at 5pm. Join us for the contemporary sung service followed by a community meal. All are welcome to the service, meal, or both. 

The 4 part zoom workshop continues on Wednesday October 16th at 7pm.

Session 3 will offer a short discussion on consciousness and the use of contemplative practices to bring a deeper connection to our consciousness.

The speaker this month will be Dr. Jannie Hofmeyr (husband of Sheila Hofmeyr). He will be talking about his time with the South African government and the ANC around the end of the apartheid period.

Jannie has a Ph.D. in Philosophy, Psychology and World Religions from the University of Capetown. Among many other accomplishments, he has written books on Religion, Intergroup Relations and Social Change. Jannie's talk will begin with a very brief summary of Gandhi’s theory of nonviolent resistance “satyagraha” - because it is key to understanding why the ANC (African National Congress) took nearly 40 years to add “armed struggle” to their strategies. Just to give you an idea: the Natal Indian Congress was founded in 1894. The African National Congress, modelled on the NIC, was founded in 1912. Jannie will then give a brief summary of the so-called three pillars of the ANC’s strategy from about 1976 onwards; and then talk about his involvement and some lessons. This promises to be a very interesting presentation!

Bring your pet(s), your friends, your children and grandchildren to our 10am Sunday Service, for a wild and wooly service of celebration and remembrance with our furry companions. We will also create space to honour the pets we have known and loved in our lives, who have already crossed the rainbow bridge into eternity.

Join us for special, memorable and fun time of worship.

We hear a Gospel passage every Sunday. We worship our way through the story of Jesus each year. We don't often read the whole of Jesus' story, however, as told in the 4 canonical Gospels. How is the story of Jesus unique in each of the gospels? What passages are less familiar? How does reading a gospel like we would any other story impact our understanding or experience of Jesus?

You are invited to join in conversation about each of the canonical Gospels, every other Wednesday. This will be a time of discussion, not presentation. Please read the "Gospel of the day" in its entirety, per the schedule below, and join in the discussion, as you might for any other book club.

(There is no value on the cards, you simply load whatever dollar amount you would like onto them, and then use them like cash when you buy groceries.)

During the month of October, the Social Justice and Outreach Team ask for your prayers and support for the Anglican Church of Canada, and all its programmes.

The Shelbourne Community Kitchen serve over 1,500 adults & 500+ children. During the month of October, they are doing their Pump up the Pantry food drive. Your donations of non-perishable food items will help to keep the pantry shelves filled this holiday season. Thank you for your generosity.

Your Social Justice and Outreach Team [SJOT] appreciate your prayers and support for this worthy cause, and will of course continue to deliver your non perishable donated food items throughout the year.

Come and discover a way of searching for God in silence and prayer in the midst of daily life. This happens the 3rd Friday of every month at 6pm, at varying locations.

Taizé Prayer at St. Philip, a renewed and loved tradition, returns monthly on the 4th Thursday of every month! All are welcome to St. Philip Oak Bay (St. Philip Anglican Church, 2928 Eastdowne Rd (at Neil)) for a candlelit service of song, silence, and contemplation, in the style of the Taizé Community.

All the funds from this event go towards keeping Christ Church Cathedral's doors open 7 days a week as a place for anyone and everyone to access personal reflection, community outreach, and outstanding musical offerings.
